The Krasnodar Regional Court dismissed the cassation appeal of ballet dancer Anastasia Volochkova, who demanded that the refusal to register her as a candidate for mayor of Sochi be invalidated. It is reported by Interfax.
Volochkova tried to challenge in court the decision of the Central District Court of Sochi, which on April 10 recognized as legitimate that the electoral commission did not allow her to participate in the elections. Thus, for the third time Volochkova was denied the right to fight for the post of mayor.
The Sochi voter’s election commission, which refused to register on April 3, motivated its decision by saying that it did not indicate the date of birth on the check for the election deposit and did not disclose the source of funds to its electoral account.
Meanwhile, ballet dancers' lawyers claim that they had the right not to provide this information.According to them, the documents submitted comply with federal law, which in this part differs from regional law.
Volochkova herself linked the commission’s decision with some of her potential rivals. She, in particular, mentioned Kazan human rights activist Dmitry Berdnikov, who was also a contender for the post of mayor, but who was also denied registration.
Berdnikov, who passed the documents on the same day as the ballerina, was extremely dissatisfied with the behavior of her guards, who did not let him into the building of the electoral commission. The human rights activist reported the incident to the police and later said that he would challenge Volochkova’s right to participate in the elections in court.
As reported, Volochkova filed documents for participation in the elections on March 26. Later, she announced her election program: according to the ballerina, her priority will be urban problems with energy supply, transport and sewage. In addition, she promised to build the best theater in Sochi.
Election of the mayor of the city will take place on April 26. Edinoros Anatoly Pakhomov, leader of the Solidarity movement Boris Nemtsov, communist Yury Dzagania, LDPR candidate Alexei Kolesnikov and two businessmen Pavel Emelyanenko and Vladimir Trukhanovsky claim this post.
Previously, several applicants were denied registration - among them were billionaire Alexander Lebedev and the candidate from the Fair Russia party Viktor Kurpitko. In addition, former presidential candidate Andrei Bogdanov refused to participate in the election race.
Early voting in the elections began on April 15.
